A friend called me from prison this AM. He plead guilty so that the courts would strike one of his felonies…otherwise he would have come under the three strikes law. Collect calls are the only way we get to talk. He has less than a year before he gets out. The three strikes law is one of the worst laws on the books. A crime of Passion in ones youth…And then two other felonies… Like stealing because you were hungry and a Paper crime of failing to report to your parole officer on a certain date cause you are tired, sick, confused and homeless… can get you “3 hot meals a day and a cot” without your freedom for 25 years to life – a mandatory sentence… don’t we think our Judges can discern what kind of punishment is deserved under the law??? California has become the prison capital of the United States. God knows that redemption is possible: Moses was a Murderer, King David an Adulterer, Paul was a Persecutor of the Church, Jacob was a con artist…William Booth was a reformed Drunk, Nicky Cruz a transformed gang leader, Chuck Colson was Nixon’s flunky corrupt lawyer… Must I go on??? Redemption is a Biblical theme… do we believe that redemption is possible??? I am glad that God does not operate on the three strikes law principle.
